New York Avenue Presbyterian Church knows that community comes in the relationships we form week by week, sharing joys and sorrows. All members seek to build this community. The Nurture Committee, a working group of the Session, takes a leadership role in providing opportunities for connection. These include:
Dinners for Nine
Dinners for Nine is a program in which participants come together in groups of eight or nine (or fewer) about every two months for a potluck dinner at a member’s home. This is a wonderful way to get to know other people in the congregation. If you are interested in joining a group, contact Miriam Dewhurst at (703) 560-0871 or miriam.dewhurst@gmail.com.
Bible Studies
Many small groups form on an ongoing basis for weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly study at the church or in members' homes. To find out more information about how to join a group, contact Rev. Tara Spuhler-McCabe in the church office or at spuhlermccabe@nyapc.org.
In addition, a Presbyterian Women Circle meets monthly at member houses throughout the Washington area. The Circle warmly invites new members to join. If you have any questions, please contact Barbara Dornan at 703.971.9047.
Coffee Hour
Each week groups sponsor a Coffee Hour in the sanctuary after the 8:45 A.M. worship service and at the back of the church (the "narthex") after the 11:00 A.M. worship service.
Parents Group
Each Sunday at 10:00 AM, this group meets near the elevators in the Park Level (the basement). Parents share their challenges, hopes, and dreams of parenting children in the faith. Our families are diverse and come from all parts of the DMV.
Spiritual Formation Groups and Silent Retreats
Spiritual formation is the growth and development of the whole person by an intenional focus on one's interior life, relationships, and spiritual practices like worship, confession, and prayer.
Rev. Roger Gench convenes a spiritual formation study group at 10:00 A.M. two Thursday mornings a month in the Docherty Center. Roger also periodically leads an Ignatian disciplines class. In the last year, we have gathered for two silent retreats at the Presbytery’s Meadowkirk camp facility in Virginia. If you would like to join a spiritual formation group or have any questions, please contact Roger at (202) 393-3702, x225.
